I did an interactive hyperlink about the Design Cycle and within it, there’s a video discussing about the instructions and about the quiz in the end. You may download the presentation from the link given below.
It was January 26, 2013, second SOP since January 12 session was cancelled but also our last SOP day. We were all excited as we started the day. Some of us went straight to the area while others assembled in Xavier.
Once we arrived at the Unang Hakbang Foundation, the kids were all excited as they paraded outside the car area. Excited as I was to know them more, we received a bad news that the kids can only stay until 10:30. In short, one of our SOP Saturdays got cancelled, and now our last SOP was also shortened. Because of this, we planned to tutor them for this last session of the SOP. I learned that in Math, they were already being taught division and for Science, they were being taught the different parts of the body. This is the time when the students become the teachers. It is our time to let our light shine and discuss whatever we have learned in Xavier, all the shortcuts and methods, and cram it to them in one session. To make learning fun, we made our “teaching method” a game like number fever. Basically, the rule is the class will be divided into several groups having at least 4 members (depending on the total number of students). Next, each member will be assigned a number. Then, we will be asking them a question and we will call out a number. The first person to stand up and clap his hands will be given the chance to answer the specific question. The group with the most points will win.
I learned that the students were really different from us in the sense that they take education very seriously. They were really into studying and were really participative. Some of us would always pray for typhoon signals raised so that we have suspension of classes. This shows how little we value school time. Some don’t even pay attention to the teacher anymore especially with the temptation an iPad offers. What is the purpose of going to school? We go to school to learn and at the same time to meet with friends and have fun. I am thankful for the SOP sessions that Xavier has provided for allowing us to learn more about ourselves and more about the people around us. Even though we have more “things” in life, better school building, more comfortable chairs and classrooms, it is basically the attitude we put into learning that defines what type of students we are and what kind of men we become when we graduate. I realized again that God is giving me this opportunity and it is part of his plan. To whom much is given, much is also expected. It becomes our responsibility now to become light to others and serve our purpose to let others feel God’s presence through us. Because of this, I believe that gratitude is what I have learned. It helped me appreciate what i have and helped me see everything good.
It was on January 19, 2013, when we had our first Saturday Outreach Program (SOP). During the SOP, different groups were assigned to different institutions where each got to interact with the people living or staying there. My group was assigned to the Unang Hakbang Foundation where little kids (age 5-10) go there to attend mass and study.
The day of our first SOP January 12, which was supposed to be our first visit, happened to be exam date of the children so we weren’t able to visit there. Since the subsequent Saturday January 19 became our first day, we planned some games that hopefully may help us get to know them more. We started out with a prayer thanking God for the wonderful opportunity that Xavier School gave us to be able to interact with our less fortunate brothers and sisters. Then, we started out our first game which is an ice breaker that allows us to ask questions to know more about them. While listening to what they were saying, I felt so sad for them especially when I learned that they would have to walk going to school, sit on tables and chairs that weren’t sturdy enough, and their teachers were also younger than those we have and probably not as experienced or qualified. Next, we planned out a simple game which is charades. The rule is your group must be able to guess the word, but the person cannot say it. He can only act it out. I felt happy because they kids enjoyed that simple game at the same time, they are able to learn new words and increase their vocabulary. We also bought food for them and this time we played their game called “Out.” And after a few hours interacting with them, it was our time to leave the institution.
I learned that I am very fortunate that I was raised in a family that is able to provide my daily needs and is able to send me to a great school. Most of the things we take for granted like household help and drivers are totally unheard of for them. I also learned that these kids were like us when we were young. They like to play games, try out different varieties of food and they also want to study, but the difference is that their family could not afford to send them to a school like Xavier. I also learned that God was present within them as well – in the least of our brethren. Sometimes we have to lose things to appreciate their value while we have them. This trip made me value the luxuries I enjoy in life and appreciate the blessings my family and school bestows on me. But when we are left to fend things on our own, we also learn independence which is a trait I found in them to be admirable. I thank God for allowing us to gather together like a meal. We are able to share our similarities and learn about ourselves and others.
Wanna Have Fun?
This is actually the second time I’m using the iPad to edit a video, but this time I have to work alone. My objective for the video is to actually catch the attention of the foreign and domestic tourists so that they would have a reason to visit the various island of the Philippines. In the video, I have added a variety of pictures portraying the attractions the Philippines has to offer. I began by creating a unique and catchy title. Then, I’ve placed different pictures while I voiced out a description of the pictures. Lastly, I concluded the video by asking a question.
Before creating the video, it is important to have a script to follow. The script is an outline on basically what will be presented or seen in the video itself. For me, it was easier to do the script itself rather that the video editing because in the script, all the things I wanted to be incorporated in the video was enumerated. As for the video, it is important to follow the script, add effects and make transitions to make the video catchy. While I was doing the script, I was already thinking, will this attract the viewers?, will the video I make be catchy?, will the images that I use convey my message clearly? These are the different problems I was thinking of. Fortunately, I had a mindset of “Hakuna Matata” which means no worries. Because of this, I trusted my instincts, finished the video and I felt happy seeing the result. During the actual video shooting, it was difficult to record my voice since the surrounding is full of noises. I had to find a perfect spot for me to be able to hear myself and reduce noise in the background. The video editing was difficult because the photos i obtained were not clear and this might affect my score.
The guidelines for the video is to make a 10 second trailer using only the words “sino ka?” At first, my partner and I had trouble thinking of a simple trailer since we didn’t want the audience to be bored. Because of this, we made a clip portraying a somewhat “action” genre clip. The ending was a clip hanger so that we can let the audience think, “what’s next?” Because of this activity, I was able to learn a lot of things since we used our iPads to shoot this trailer. Using the iPad to edit a video is difficult, but with practice I’m pretty sure that the next time I edit a video, it will be easy to handle.🙂
This is my dream house. Although it looks weird, I can assure you that this house is sturdy. I designed it this way to create different rooms and to make the house unique. Have you ever seen a house with no doors, a rollable entrance and no definite shape? I guess not!😀 I designed it this way to save electricity. Instead of having air conditioners inside the house, I will be using the air that is always present and is free of charge. Of course, the internal design is not yet finished, but I can guarantee you that you won’t regret living in this house. You might think that this is not a house yet since there are no floors yet, but again this is not the final product. You can always redecorate/renovate it to the way you like it. I really hope that people would like this kind of house due to the fact that it is unique and would want to try something new.🙂
Huwag natin pahintulutan
Digmaan ang kasagutan
Nang langit ay di masaktan
Ang lahat ng ito’y sundin
Parang batang masunurin
O Diyos, kami’y tulungan
Para sa kinabukasan
